PROJECT
Interactive design solution to enhance bouldering technique for novices
Objetive
Develop a UX-based test methodology applicable across various IKEA Intralogistics projects, including outlining the planning and implementation of diverse design methods.
Context
I participated in the "Do It Yourself (DIY) Solutions for Last Mile Delivery" project, addressing urban home delivery. Within this project, I utilized various UX methods and worked closely with the team to assess and evaluate their effectiveness, ensuring user-centric and practical outcomes.

Design process involvement: Upon my involvement, the team was in the process of selecting potential solutions and exploring opportunities for collaboration.
Final testing: Selected cargo bikes and scooters for further testing Took place in Älmhult and Stockholm Involved customers, IKEA co-workers, and stakeholders
Problem statement
Today getting goods home by our customer (DIY) instantly in a convenient way remains to be a challenge in the urban environment. The DIY options today is not convenient and affordable. With car and driving license ownership declining, this can affect our business negatively.

Research questions
How can we design a test methodology for Inter IKEA’s Intralogistics new projects?

How can a co-design approach be utilized to develop this test methodology?

DISCOVER
Interview
Interview with project team member on exploratory phase
Aim: Gain insight into the process of developing the interview guide and understanding the objectives
Outcome:

• Thorough preparation and adaptability in interview guide development
• Prioritized essential questions
• Focused on understanding customer challenges in IKEAstores and their interest in DIY solutions
DEFINE

BACKGROUND
The challenge was to create a solution to enhance the experience of bouldering and make it more accessible through interaction design.
PROJECT
Interactive design solution to enhance bouldering technique for novices
SOLUTION
An interactive system helping novices improve their technique taking into account their different body skills and by being more aware of their bodies.

Co-design workshop
Designed and facilitated a co-design workshop where we revisited and refined the requirements, building upon the outcomes of a previous MoSCoW requirements workshop.

Aim: Revisit and refine requirements, and establish a collective understanding of their meanings.

Duration: 1.5-hour Participants: 8 people

Task: Define requirement in the columns with detailed explanations in Miro

Motivation: Prototyping and evaluation often involve defining or adjusting requirements. An iterative approach enables continuous improvement and alignment with objectives

DEVELOP

Co-design workshop insights
CDW insights was used to create interview and survey questions
This ensured comprehensive exploration of all aspects in the user test.
Determined suitability of each question for interview or survey:

•Survey: Captured participants perspectives on solution effectiveness
•Interviews: Delved deeper into participant experiences

Color-coded requirements:
Green Suitable for current stage exploration
Red: Not suitable
Interview guide
The interview guide was structured into distinct sections, each focusing on different areas: first impressions, overall experience, features, comfort, and usage performance.

To ensure clarity and ease of navigation, the questions were grouped within boxes. The interview commenced with a scenario where a customer visits an IKEA store, initially planning to purchase only a few items but eventually requiring a cargo bike or scooter to transport them.

Co-design workshop
Plan user test
During the development phase, I organized a workshop with the same participants to plan user testing for the scooters and cargo bikes in Stockholm. The goal was to create a test plan togheter with the team.

Co-design emphasizes everyone's inherent creativity, encouraging active participation. I presented three flexible test scenarios with plans and suggested research methods, inviting feedback and expansion. As a facilitator, I fostered a creative, comfortable environment to encourage idea expression and collaboration.

Design proposal
After analyzing the CDW, design proposals were created based on both the literature review and insights from the workshop. These proposals informed the final user test plan, ensuring it was grounded in both research and workshop findings.

Affinity mapping
Aim: Connect qualitative user research to insights

Steps:
1. Collect Data: Gather qualitative data
2. Cluster: Group similar points with post-its
3. Identify themes: Find common patterns
4. Insight generation: Translate themes into insights

DELIVER
Conclusion: Toolkit
Six design proposal were defined:

Employ a mixed research methods approach
Utilize contextual scenarios to enhance the authenticity when assessing the solution

Evaluate the user experience, includes emotions and holistic point of view when testing products
This study developed a test methodology for Inter IKEA’s Intralogistics solutions using a co-design approach.
The resulting adaptable toolkit supports user testing and aligns with the Innovate & Create Solutions phase, with further validation required for broader use.

Evaluating the overall quality of user experiences

Incorporating a co-design approach to develop the test plan

Define product requirements to clarify and generate valuable insights utilized in crafting interview and survey questions
What I learnt
A key learning from conducting over 50 user tests was managing participant recruitment. I gained skills in engaging customers and co-workers, ensuring a smooth process. The experience highlighted the importance of clear communication and trust-building
I’ve learned that videos are an effective way to communicate project concepts, especially the problem statement. They clarify key challenges and simplify complex ideas, ensuring a clear message. This is something I’ll consider in future projects, as videos can also convey a vision for what to create.
